The
picnic basket has really moved on from its humble early beginnings, to
the more elaborate affairs on sale these days to suit ones preferences
and needs. A look through the history of picnic baskets quickly reveals
that at the very heart of the picnic is the meal, which should be
divine in appearance and delectable to the palate. But above all else is
portable for the participants. Additionally, it also reveals evidence of
the steady refinements stowed upon such a humble carry case of such
dining delights.
A very good example for the elaborate picnic basket is our
fine bone china which comes with real
crystal wine glasses, and with stainless steel cutlery, highest quality
tableware, has insulated compartments to hold hot and cold foods, also
has a wine cooler. All giving that much more sophisticated feel.
If one prefers a much more affordable, modern and lighter picnic case,
there are picnic baskets designed as backpacks; they give comfort for long walks,
or off to the hills. Each has a large insulated food and drinks compartment
and provide the same inventory as the baskets, only in much lighter
materials.
Other contemporary styles includes picnic cooler totes from our
carnival picnic collection. The
large front pocket contains break resistant place settings and
the tall, spacious main compartment is insulated with a wipe clean
lining for food and drink. These picnic totes are colourful, chic and
casual.
Naturally, the history of picnic baskets clearly shows that the
proverbial wicker basket is a thing of the past, but some quality baskets these
days still sport the traditional willow. (Our full willow baskets come from
sustainable farmed sources). Only the interior has been much more
modernised. It now features new designer patterned cloths, colourful
corkscrew, crisp linens, tartan cloth or even a waterproof rug. (See the
Gordon luxury tea and wine basket in the
fitted picnic basket collections).
But with all of the new styles available these days, some may still prefer the
casual picnic baskets gifts to give to someone for the basic yet more affordable basket look.
